Finished this today! Reading a chapter or two per day was my Lenten devotion. I am not an aspiring contemplative by any means, but this work was full of encouragement and mystery. “For it is not what you are or have been that God looks at with his merciful eyes, but what you would be.” (Also, the book was a couple of decades old, so the paper was browning and smelled really nice whenever I opened it.)

The title of the work evokes the transformation of wine into the blood of Christ. After the work was removed from its religious setting in the mid-1960s, the artist bought it back and in 1978 decided to rework it. ‘I realised that the quality and truth of the picture only grew as it became darker and darker’, Rainer has explained.
